Categories broken and Emails broken

So everything was installed, including the cat fix from a previous post of last year but for some reason my site still wont show anything in categories, Db is setup and changes reflect from the admin page. I am also having problems with the email, i hooked up smtp properly but it is giving me an ajax error.None of my customers are getting their products, reset links etc what to do?
